As I reflect upon the question of how my education at HCHS may have influenced my life, I recognize how much that experience set my future course.  I entered Hunter in the 7th grade having no foreign language experience except for the Yiddish that my mother spoke with my grandmother when they didn’t want me to understand them.  Before school started I needed to choose a foreign language to study, so it was the random checking of the box marked “French” that set me on my way. I fell in love with the French language in Dr. Andrée Peynot’s class, discovered that I had a talent for it, and the rest is history.
I received a B.A. in French literature at the University of Rochester, lived in Paris for a year, did an M.A. T. in French at the University of Chicago, worked in NYC for the Yves Saint Laurent Company as a translator/interpreter, and married a francophone husband, thereby acquiring a family in Paris. Subsequently, as a stay-at-home Mom in New York, I made myself available to my son’s school (Horace Mann) as an adjunct to the Foreign Languages Department.  I stayed long after he graduated and am still there, currently teaching French in the Middle Division with no plans to retire.

Update:

Since our last reunion I continued as a faculty member at The Horace Mann School, teaching French in both the Middle and Upper Schools. I retired in 2020 when Covid-19 upended all of everyone’s life plans. Presently I spend my time with my husband either in Florida or New York City where we dote upon our two adorable granddaughters.
