I have been living in Siberia, aka Boston, for the last 30 years (has it really been that long?), and continue to miss "the city", as I still refer to New York. I am shocked that the Brooklyn I grew up in is so hip, although perhaps it no longer is--it's hard to keep up. I make a point of telling people I meet that I grew up in Brooklyn before there was anything chic or hip about it. It seems to be a perverse source of pride for me.

I have been married for 27 years to a wonderful man, who is a scientist, and we have a terrific, bright son, who is gifted in many ways and has yet to figure out what to do with his life. He's probably moving to Brooklyn in the fall. I am a psychiatrist working part-time in private practice and do some consulting to college counseling centers. I keep wondering if there should be a new psychiatric diagnostic code for young people who live in Brooklyn for a while after they graduate college. My husband and I also have a very high strung cat, who is on Zoloft. Earlier this year my son adopted a dog presumably to facilitate the separation process. We have a house in Martha's Vineyard, that my son, his girlfriend, and his dog seem to have temporarily appropriated. So much for separation. I have recently taken up writing--mostly essays--although when I look through my computer, I see that I've been writing for longer than I realized.

All are welcome to ring me up when in Boston or Martha's Vineyard, where I spend most of my time trying to keep assorted varmints from getting to the tomatoes before I do.
